TechLife Columbus: Ohio Tech Bits Blog » Blog Archive » Dispatch: Not wired at home? You’re in shrinking minority in U.S.

In 1997, Bill Clinton was beginning his second term, the Cleveland Indians lost to the Florida Marlins in the World Series, and the newfangled Internet was something you never imagined your mother would ever use.

Only 18 percent of households nationally were hooked up to the Internet, so you probably weren’t connecting from home, either.

But by last year, 69 percent of U.S. households were connected to the Internet, the U.S. Census Bureau reported yesterday. That’s up from almost 62 percent in 2007, the last time the bureau conducted the survey...

Only 18 percent of households nationally were hooked up to the Internet, so you probably weren't connecting from home, either. About 75 percent of Ohio residents had home Internet service in 2009, up from 70 percent the year before, said Connect Ohio, a state-funded nonprofit group trying to extend high-speed Internet access to all parts of the state...

The recently completed Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission's state Route 32 and U.S. 50 corridor study was designed to evaluate the current industrial, retail, and residential areas within the 12 county region and to assess areas for potential growth. The study was designed to be partnered with an Ohio Department of Transportation traffic study in the corridor.

The study found several other hindrances to development of the region by polling businesses already in the area and those considering the corridor for development. The number one problem cited was the lack of affordable and reliable access to a broadband Internet connection, something Brown County has been working on through the Connect Ohio initiative...

Preble fiber optic loop before commission « Citizens For Preble County

An 80 mile fiber optic loop was discussed in a meeting with Matt Appenzeller and others. In attendance were multiple people to discuss the benefits and needs for current and future higher speed broadband.

Kevin Turner of the Preble County ESC told about House Bill 407 that may pass at the state level. The bill would permit schools to make up calamity days by having students access online lessons that could be returned when school was back in session. Other benefits would allow students at schools unable to offer a wide curriculum to take classes online instead of using brick and mortar buildings. This would also aid some 400 students and families already being home schooled in the county...
