Dr. Jan Osborn has been the Superintendant of Putnam County Schools since 1993. Before becoming an instructor at Bowling Green State University, Ohio Northern University and the University of Findlay, he served in numerous capacities primarily in K-12 special needs education. VAN WERT - Ohio Governor Ted Strickland announced on Wednesday that Ohio will receive $1.8 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the stimulus package, to further his plan to bring the state's broadband capabilities up to speed in order to compete with other states and countries for jobs.

Connect Ohio, a public-private partnership with the Ohio Department of Administrative Services, was created in order to compile and map the availability of broadband services across Ohio. Part of their study, in addition to finding sites where it was located, was to discover the speed and types of technology in use. High-speed broadband access for the past several years has been one of the top ten decision-making items cited by high-tech companies when they are looking for places to build new facilities or expand existing operations...

The Stark County District Library Foundation board has donated $6,000 to the Stark County District Library to fund two projects.

Half of the money will support the library’s Young Mom’s Club, a literacy project for young mothers in their teens and early twenties, and will pay for books and literacy activities for the group.

The rest will support the Madge Youtz branch’s “Borrow a Laptop” program, which began in 2008 with 10 laptops. Washington, D.C. – U.S Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that Ohio will receive more than $2.4 million in grants and loans to expand broadband access. The Consolidated Electric Cooperative (CEC) has been awarded $1,034,413 in grants and $1,399,499 in loans to invest in a broadband network connecting Ohio communities that currently have limited or no access to the technology. Brown fought for the federal funds, made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, to target rural communities and be distributed through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

According to a study by Connect Ohio, median revenue among broadband-connected businesses in Ohio grew twice as fast as those that do not use broadband. In addition, a 2006 study by MIT found that communities with wide access to broadband experienced faster job growth and new business development. A later report by the Brookings Institution found that for every one percent of increased broadband access, a state could expect 0.2-0.3 percent growth in employment...

The Mansfield family, who asked that their name not be publicized, were chosen in a raffle staged by CenturyLink, Connect Ohio and the Ohio farm Bureau in a drawing where people could submit their names for entry at county fairs across Ohio. The mother of the family who won home schools her six children, who range in age from two to 13-years-old and says she's excited about the opportunity a new computer and high-speed broadband internet service will bring to her family...

12 states pick GIS to help build broadband coverage maps - ArcNews Fall 2009 Issue

Twelve U.S. states and Puerto Rico have chosen solutions based on ESRI's ArcGIS software and technology to help develop broadband coverage maps and better position them for competitive funding available through the U.S. State Broadband Data and Development Grants Program. These states and territory selected ESRI Business Partner Connected Nation, a nonprofit corporation based in Washington, D.C., to implement ESRI's GIS technology-based solution to develop maps that identify areas where high-speed Internet service is available and unavailable across its state or territory.

Connected Nation specializes in establishing public-private partnerships to spearhead the initiatives and develop the maps. Nevada and Texas join a growing list of states partnering with Connected Nation, including Alaska, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee...

Streets open for traffic / Mount Vernon News

Mavis met with officials from Connect Ohio this week. The group is focusing on providing Internet access to rural areas and Mount Vernon and Knox County were high on its list. A pilot program was started in Colorado this year and Mavis said there may be some work done in Knox County this coming summer...

Making medical connections - Samaritan linking to HealthNet broadband network

Medicine is getting faster and Samaritan Regional Health System is on board for the ride.

Samaritan Regional Health System in coming months is scheduled to join HealthNet, a broadband network linking rural health care facilities in Northern Ohio. Once connected, Samaritan staff will have the capability to transport telemedicine applications, digital records, medical imaging and remote diagnostic services.

In addition to its ties with OneCommunity, SRHS also is working with Connect Ohio, a nonprofit organization that strives to improve technology use across the state and to promote broadband implementation in Ashland County...
