LISBON - Columbiana County commissioners are increasing efforts to ensure the county is among those seeking federal stimulus money for the expansion of high-speed Internet service. Commissioners this week adopted a resolution in support of the efforts of Broadband for America, which describes itself is as a coalition of telecom companies, Internet providers and consumer advocacy groups pushing for the expansion of high-speed Internet, or broadband, service.

Commissioners are working closely with Connect Ohio, a nonprofit group hired by the state to work with each county and local Internet providers to develop a plan to expand broadband access across the state. Connect Ohio unsuccessfully sought federal stimulus money for Ohio last year and intends to apply for some of the $7.2 billion in stimulus money being made available in 2010 for expansion of broadband...

States use ESRI's BroadbandStat application for broadband initiatives

Redlands, California—Ten U.S. states and one U.S. territory will soon launch comprehensive broadband mapping and planning initiatives based on ESRI's geographic information system (GIS) technology. They will use BroadbandStat, an application developed by ESRI and Connected Nation, to organize and display broadband service and related data on the Internet.

The BroadbandStat application hosts interactive Web maps that show broadband coverage across U.S. states and incorporates other relevant data. It includes tools that use service provider and demographics data to identify unserved and underserved broadband areas with optimum potential for new broadband infrastructure development. Its Web capabilities enable a shared picture of broadband data and support transparency by giving the public access to the information...

Co-op moves ahead on high-speed Internet in Morrow, Delaware counties | The Columbus Dispatch

An electric cooperative's plan to expand high-speed Internet in Morrow and Delaware counties is aiming higher than providing only faster Web surfing.

The broader goal is to bring new businesses and jobs to rural communities. Consolidated Electric Cooperative, based in Mount Gilead, won $2.4 million in federal stimulus dollars that will go toward increasing broadband access and building a fiber-optic network that eventually will connect Mansfield and Columbus.

An estimated 205,000 households across Ohio do not have access to high-speed Internet, said Dave Sweet, spokesman for Connect Ohio...

Library foundation donates funds - The-Press-News.com

The Stark County District Library Foundation Board, at its December meeting, voted to donate $6,000 to the Stark County District Library to fund two separate projects. Half of the money will support the library's Young Mom's Club, a literacy project for young mothers in their teens and early 20s, and will pay for books and literacy activities for the group.

The other half of the donation will support the Madge Youtz Branch's "Borrow a Laptop" program. Begun in 2008 with 10 small laptops, the program was initially funded by Connect Ohio and Connected Nation. This program supplies small, sturdy laptop computers for use in the branch and for loan. Some of the computers now require replacement and the Foundation will support continuation of the program...

The Obama administration is pumping billions of dollars into expanding the availability of high-speed Internet access to areas that lack it, in an effort to extend the broadband lifeline that is essential to attracting private investment and creating jobs in the 21st century.

Connect Ohio, a nonprofit organization that Ohio created in 2008 to determine where broadband exists and where it is needed in the state, already displays a broadband-availability map on its Web site at www.connectohio.org. The federal funding will allow the organization to collect more detailed data from current broadband providers statewide to update the map, said Tom Fritz, executive director of Connect Ohio, based in Columbus...

People who use farm equipment in rural Ohio may have a hard time getting the kind of internet connectivity they desire, though a recent effort may help that.

According to Governor Ted Strickland's office, the Consolidated Electric Cooperative received $2.4 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in order to construct a 166-mile broadband network in the northern part of the state.
