Federal money to expand broadband communications in Ashtabula County

A $44.8 million grant awarded to Connect Ohio should extend broadband infrastructure into Ashtabula County.

Jeff Beebe, state operations manager for Connect Ohio, northeast region, said the federal stimulus grant will allow the nonprofit fiber-optic provider OneCommunity to build a $70 million fiber construction project in Northeast Ohio.

The route of the fiber-optic cable is still to be determined, but a preliminary map shows the line entering Ashtabula County from Geauga County near the Trumbull Township line, heading northeast at a 45 degree angle, then shooting south from around Austinburg into Trumbull County.
